Mahk's Freakin' Rules

By: Brian Gilleece

Welcome to a great week, excited to get back into it and talk about how a high school drop out and ex con from Dorchester becomes a huge movie star...

While drinking my coffee before going to the gym yesterday I was poking around on the inter webs and I came across some interesting stuff about Mr.Mark Wahlberg. I don't think it's a surprise I'm a a fan, but what has always impressed me about Mark is his work ethic that borders on obsessive.

He goes to bed at 7:30pm to gets up at 4am to train in the gym. Everyday. It's been this way for years. You see people in his position and it's easy to assume things are one way, probably easy, probably on cruise control, but it is just not the case.

Mark produced THE FIGHTER, he idolized the lead character growing up and desperately wanted to get that movie made. Nobody would make it, nobody believed he could do it, nobody believed in the project. He trained for 4 years for the movie, not knowing if he would ever get one frame of that movie made, just on faith and the chance that when financing and the right people came around he would be ready. Championship fighter ready. Boxing training is grueling, and 4 years of that while making other movies, producing etc, yikes.

Obviously it eventually got made, it was arguably some of his best work and he was ready, but it's that same faith, staunch determination and comitment that every single actor needs to have and even grander, every single person who is successful in anything needs to have.

Belief in your self that goes way beyond what anyone can tell you what you can or can not do and the fortitude to do it every single day, no questions asked. What i'm getting are are the 10 things listed below and finding out what they "mean" to you in your very own specific way.

MARK WAHLBERGS 10 RULES TO SUCCESS:

1.) Stay True To Yourself

2.) Dont Shy Away From A Challenge

3.) Do Whats Right

4.) Choose Success

5.) Be Disciplined

6.) Show Up

7.) Don't Listen to the #littleman

8.) Work Hard

9.) Do It All

10.) Commit Fully

CHOOSE:

INTERIOR BEDROOM: CHARACTER A WAKES UP FROM A SLEEP, SETS HIS FEET ON THE FLOOR, LETS OUT A BIG YAWN...

CHARACTER A - "IM GOING TO CHOOSE TO NOT BE SUCCESSFUL TODAY!"

NO, never happened. Nobody "chooses" to be not successful in the morning, but the fact of the matter is their inactions choose it for them. Actors in general frustrate me, I'm just speaking in general and not about ya'll of course, I know it sounds weird, I'm an actor, I know a lot of actors etc... but, it's frustrating to watch some of the most open, creative, caring and interesting people fail themselves through lack of 1 or all of the 10 steps above.

So many fail at so much on the list because they have some thing in their head about what it means to be an actor or in the arts. The best people are the best because they make themselves the best, they choose to be the best, they choose to work hard, they choose to commit, they choose to stay true and be disciplined.

That's it, that's all there has ever been and that is all there will ever be. It is not always easy, or fun, or straightforward, but, it is always the path.

Let's RE-commit to doing the 10 things on this list, finding out exactly what they mean to us individually and finding a way to everyday choose success!

Right?!
